The Lafontaine-Baldwin Youth Conference at the Sharon Temple was organized as a collaboration between Pickering College (co-host), the York Region District School Board, the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, and the Sharon Temple (co-host).
Eighty high school students from across York Region and Georgina Island participated in a full day and evening of guest speakers, including Chief Ted Williams and JRS, talking about pre-confederation models of democratic governance, including Anishinaabe perspectives, those of The Children of Peace and those of the 19th century democratic reformers Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine and Robert Baldwin. The talks were followed by an open discussion moderated by Steve Paikin, host of TVO’s The Agenda.
